Antelope Island Trip Details

On Saturday, June 28th the Utah Stereo Society will be traveling to Antelope Island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake for a photo shoot. We will be photographing the lake and landscape, the Fielding Gar Ranch, and the wild life of the island. For those who have not been to the island, or who were there a long time ago, you might be interested in a look at the state park's website. There is much to do and see on the island, from the herds of 600 bison, to the oldest rocks on earth, and to the Fielding Garr Ranch the oldest anglo-built structure in Utah still standing on its existing foundation. A brochure about the island is available to download here.

We can car pool or drive ourselves. If you would like to ride with someone else please contact them directly or notify Larry Haines at lhaines@digis.net telephone (801) 489-6600. Please notify Brent brent@woodsounds.com or Larry as soon as you make a decision to be with us!

We would like to meet at the park entrance at 3.00 pm. If, on that day, you are unable to get there at that time please notify Brent Haines on his cell phone (801) 822-1415 or if you cannot reach him try Larry Haines on his cell phone (801) 376-8281. Some of the best times to get great photos will be in the afternoon and evening as the sun starts down and the light changes. So we will probably be leaving to return home at about 9.00 pm.

Our first visit that afternoon will be at the Fielding Garr Ranch which is about 45 minutes from the park entrance. Photos there will not be so dependent on the sun. After that we will travel to the north shore of the island. Most of us will be bringing a picnic dinner, and later we will find a pretty place to stop. There is a concession on the island with some simple foods. There are many back-country hiking trails which some may want to take. For those of us less well equipped we may want to stay closer to a vehicle. If possible it would be nice to get together for our picnic dinner. The park rangers advise us to bring bug spray for mosquitoes and sun screen lotion.

Directions: Travel north on Interstate 15 ,and take Exit 332 off Interstate 15, then drive west on Antelope Drive to the park entrance. From downtown Provo it is about 94 miles and takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Less of course for those leaving from the Salt Lake area. If we plan to meet at the park entrance at 3.00pm we will have to leave the Provo area about 12.45 pm.
